Hello everyone!
As we say goodbye to Australia and hello to New Zealand, I have to say, Australia exceeded my expectations. We had three wonderful days and hope to return someday to visit again! That’s what I love about cruising - you can see so many places, some better than others, and if you really fall in love with a place, you can always come back on a different trip! As much as we loved Australia, it was VERY expensive. We kept saying we were so thankful we were sleeping (and doing a lot of our eating) on the ship because food, accommodation, transportation, EVERYTHING was so expensive, we wouldn’t be able to afford to stay for more than a few days anyhow!
Melbourne, Australia
Our second Australian stop was Melbourne. I didn’t know much about the city, other than that it is currently the world’s “most livable city”, (I learned that from watching House Hunters on the cruise ship because they basically play 8 episodes of the show a day). The weather was beautiful and we planned on riding bicycles for an hour or so. Dad was planning on riding for the whole day (obviously) but Spencer and I weren’t willing to commit to a whole day of riding when we had heard such great things about the coffee, food, and…shopping. :)
We planned on renting bikes from “Freddie’s Bike Shop” in Batman Park (yes, you read that right, Batman Park), but before we got there, we saw a rack of “city bikes” and for $3, you could rent one for the whole day. (For comparison purposes, Freddie’s was charing $35/day). We figured the city bikes were the best value for our money so after having a bit of difficulty figuring out how to rent them (there wasn’t a person manning the station, just a machine), we each had a bike and we were ready to go!

Feeling confident
What we didn’t realize until we read the details of the rental more closely, was that we had to “return” the bike to a city bike station every 45 minutes…So even though we rented it for a whole day, they require you to get a new code every 45 minutes at one of the stations around town and do the whole thing over again. You wouldn’t have to pay each time (just the one $3 fee), but it was definitely inconvenient and somewhat stressful because we never knew where the closest station was, and sometimes when we did find a station, the racks would be filled with bikes already so we had to race to find another one in time before our 45 minutes were up. It felt a bit like being on The Amazing Race but…less fun. We also spent a lot of time trying to figure out where we were and where we were going...

Felt like this was an occurrence every 10 minutes
Anyway, despite the inconvenience, we were able to ride downtown, through a park, and along the coast where there were lots of people hanging out at the beach. I wasn’t able to take a lot of pictures because I was riding a bike, and also because of the time constraints!
After riding for about an hour and a half, Spencer and I decided to take the train into the downtown area while Dad kept riding. He went to a few bike stores still looking for spokes and a tube for his irregular sized wheel and had no luck. However, I think he enjoys the hunt. Also, a little update for you: Spencer checked his visa bill yesterday and discovered that we were charged $9 each instead of $3 (it charged us every time we got a new code). Annoying.
ANYWAY, Spencer and I got to downtown and fell in love with the city even more. To me, it felt so European! So many people walking everywhere, lots of cafes, little shops, and alleys that lead to other cute shops! The whole city was also already completely decorated for Christmas which made all the chocolate shops, patisseries, and candy stores even cuter.

Getting in the Christmas spirit!
Spencer and I walked for quite a long time window shopping (couldn’t really afford to buy anything) and then we stopped for pizza and wine at a little cafe. The whole street was lined with tables, just like in Italy. After pizza, we stopped at the donut shop and finished off our day with a traditional flat white. (My friend that lives in Melbourne said this was what all the Aussies ordered so we felt like locals).

I loved walking through all the indoor/outdoor shopping areas!

Definitely reminded me of Europe!
One of my favourite moments from the day was when Spencer and I were drinking coffee and, in reference to our morning biking around town, he let out a groan and said, “That is the longest I’ve ever ridden my bike!” I almost spit my coffee out because I was laughing so hard (he was kind of offended). “An hour and a half??” I said. “That’s like…5% of a typical day biking with my dad”. He reminded me that not everyone grew up with Keith Odegard. Anyway, now Spencer’s on a kick to up his stamina and keep up with my Dad on the bike.
Overall, a fantastic day in the city! I definitely recommend visiting this city if you are ever in this corner of the world.
That night, Spencer and Dad reached a new level of friendship when they started sharing clothes. Dad actually wore Spencer's VELVET tie to dinner - very trendy!!

Did they also colour coordinate...?

Spencer and I share one glass of wine on formal nights to treat ourselves. I'm sure our wine attendant has given up on making much money off of us this cruise!
The following day, I started feeling a bit queasy. My stomach was aching, I had a headache and what felt like the beginning of a fever. I didn’t go to dinner or the show that night, but as expected, Spencer and Dad proceeded as usual and had a delightful night. Without me.
I got worse throughout the night and, well, I will spare you the details, but I basically caught the norovirus that has affected a lot of people on the ship. I quarantined myself and stayed inside our cabin for the entire day and following night for fear of infecting anyone else. It was terrible, but I was glad I only had symptoms for about 24 hours. Unfortunately, a lot of the passengers that have the norovirus are not sticking to the quarantine rules, so there are still a lot of people that are sick. We are washing our hands every 10 minutes (at least that’s what it feels like) and staying away from basically everyone so that we can remain healthy!

Found my happy place!
Hobart, Tasmania
I was so relieved to wake up in Hobart, Tasmania and feel like myself again! It felt great to get outside and be in the fresh air again - even if it was rainy! Dad had looked up a bike rental place so he planned on riding the whole day. He had all of his rain gear on because it was pretty much pouring rain when we got off the ship. I said, “Dad, this is pretty bad, are you sure you want to ride?” to which he said, “Oh yeah, this is bad. But it will get worse.” And then off he went without a care in the world! I guess when you have proper rain gear, you can do anything.
Spencer and I walked to tourist information and got on a tour to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Spencer was so excited about this. As happy as he was he got to see a kangaroo and a koala at the Sydney zoo, he knew he could get closer to the animals here. We had about 2 hours to kill before the tour started, so we walked in downtown Hobart which was so cute! We even found a Target!
Since it was so rainy and my stomach still hadn't received 100%, we wanted to find a place to have tea. A local recommended we go to a book store that was a few blocks up the street and off the beaten path. It was a very cute little shop (reminded me of “The Shop on the Corner” from “You’ve Got Mail”). There was a cafe and Spencer went up and ordered. He told me that he ordered a pot of tea for each of us. I thought that may be a bit much, but he would be able to drink whatever I couldn’t finish. However, when the server came, she had THREE pots of tea. I won’t bore you with the details, but basically Spencer ordered three pots and didn’t realize it. Not only was this A LOT of tea, but we only had about 40 minutes before we had to leave for our tour, so we were just chugging tea like you wouldn’t believe. Did I mention Australia is expensive? Once you’ve spent the money, you want to make sure you get the most out of it! We did finish all three pots and then had to go to the bathroom several times in the next few hours.

Our tour van picked us up and we went on a 30 minute journey through the city and bits of the countryside to get to the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. Spencer was most excited to see the koalas up close and personal. Koalas sleep for roughly 20 hours a day, so we were lucky that we got to see one that was awake, eating eucalyptus leaves and loving his life. We also got to get up close and personal with a sleeping koala (though we couldn’t touch it) and it was amazing! Not only are they super cute animals, but they legitimately looked like stuffed animals when you get close to them.

In addition to the koalas and the kangaroos, we got to see the famous tasmanian devil! They are so interesting to watch because the hobble around like little puppies, they don’t seem scary but then if they look at you directly with their fangs hanging out, it can be a bit terrifying! We got to see a wombat, a little baby wombat, lots of lizards and birds as well. All of these animals were rescued in some form or another. The wombats were rescued after being hit by cars on the highway, and a lot of the other animals were born with deformities or suffered injuries making it nearly impossible for them to survive in the wild. It was very cool to be able to see this place and interact with the animals in a more natural habitat than the zoo.

Very happy campers! |
The city of Hobart itself was beautiful and we actually ended up with pretty decent weather throughout the day. The views on the ride to and from the wildlife sanctuary were great and we got to see some different parts of the city and the surrounding area! Dad said he had a really great day cycling and even managed to take some pictures!
I love how he really took some time to set up his bike for this photo |
On our way to New Zealand, we had a day of "scenic cruising". The ship sailed through Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, and Dusty Sound. Although we didn't have the clearest weather (lots of fog in the morning, especially), it was still very cool to see the fjords and be so close to them! Spencer and I were able to spend about two hours looking at them from Deck 3 where we were sheltered from the rain. Dad, however, spent the whole day up on the top deck, wearing all of his rain gear. He wasn't going to miss a minute of it! As impressive as the fjords were, I have told Spencer that the Norwegian fjords were even better...(And now I'm trying to get him to book a cruise to Norway ASAP).

You'll notice in the picture above that there were lots of clouds making the view somewhat obstructed. We weren't too upset about it, but there was a group of passengers who paid $1,200 USD to go on a helicopter ride through the fjords...Not sure they would see much! Hahahahaah (we always take pleasure in other people spending money on the cruise while we get by with spending a fraction of they do). Anyway, after being chilled to our bones in the morning, we decided that watching the fjords from the hot tub drinking champagne would be a much more enjoyable way to spend the day!

One thing that Dad has been great about has been offering to take pictures of Spencer and I on this trip. It is nice to have some pictures that aren't selfies. Anyway, he took quite a few pictures of us in the hot tub and became the resident photographer for the hot tubbers that day. I'm glad I was able to snap a pic of him hard at work. ;)

Maybe a new calling for him...? |
We have one week left on the ship and many towns still to see in New Zealand! We are hoping for good weather, adventure, and more fun times.
Stay tuned,
Annika
Darling! Loving the pics. Making me home sick. Melbourne def. feels European. Very artsy/ musician environment. That little spiked critter is an Echidna. The pic of the Doubtful sound taken from the back of the ship, that was my view from the treadmill on NCL. I could run for days with that view. Very inspiring. Happy cruising.
ReplyDeleteLove your blogs - so wish I could see Australia/New Zealand - definitely on my bucket list, especially after seeing your pictures:)
